正山小種 Zhengshan Xiaozhong

Before Lapsang Souchong became the smoked tea the West knows, there was Zhengshan Xiaozhong (正山小種) — the original, unsmoked version from the same Tongmuguan valley in the Wuyi Mountains. The smoking was a later adaptation for export markets and preservation; the tea drunk in Tongmuguan itself was always this: a naturally processed black tea with no pine smoke added. The name means 'authentic mountain small leaf' — zhengshan (正山, true mountain) specifying that it must come from within the Tongmuguan nature reserve, a protected forest above 1000 metres. Leaves here are larger-budded local cultivars grown in cold, mist-heavy conditions that produce a tea with high natural sugars and a distinctive longan fruit character (桂圓香, guì yuán xiāng) that no lower-altitude material can replicate. This Premium grade is processed entirely within the reserve by a small-batch producer, withered over pine frames and fully oxidised without smoking. In the cup: bright amber-copper liquor, clean and luminous. The aroma is remarkable — dried longan, warm honey, pine forest air, a whisper of rose. On the palate: smooth body, stone fruit and honey in the middle, a naturally sweet finish with zero astringency. Radically different from the smoked version — more delicate, more layered, more rare.
