Black Tea — Lapsang Souchong
Tongmuguan Village Tea
桐木關 · Tóngmùguān
The village at the origin of all black tea — Tongmuguan pass in the Wuyi Mountains of Fujian, where Lapsang Souchong was first made during the Ming dynasty and where the tradition has never stopped.
What they're known for
- ▸ Tongmuguan is the birthplace of all black tea: Lapsang Souchong was created here during the Ming dynasty (circa 1568).
- ▸ The original smoked version uses pine wood smoke; zhengshan xiaozhong is the same leaf without the smoke.
- ▸ 正山 (zhengshan) means 'true mountain' — the legal designation for tea that actually comes from this area.
- ▸ Tongmuguan is a national nature reserve: no pesticides, no synthetic fertiliser. Fewer than 200 households.
Tongmuguan (桐木關, 'Paulownia Wood Pass') is a remote mountain valley inside the Wuyi Mountains nature reserve of Fujian Province, accessible by a single road and home to fewer than two hundred farming households. It is also the birthplace of all black tea.
The story goes that during the Ming dynasty (circa 1568) a group of passing soldiers occupied the tea drying sheds in Tongmuguan just as the freshly picked leaf was laid out to wither. With no way to continue the usual green tea process, a local farmer rescued the batch by drying the leaves over pine wood fires — and accidentally invented both the fully oxidised method and the pine smoke character that would become Lapsang Souchong. The method spread, and within a century black tea had reached Europe and become the foundation of every English, Irish and Russian tea blend in existence.
Today the village still produces two styles from the same leaf. Zhengshan Xiaozhong (正山小種) is the unsmoked original — dried by pine-wood heat, not direct smoke, giving a clean, round, longan- fruited black tea without any smoky character. Zhengzong Lapsang adds a second pine-smoke drying stage that gives the tea its unmistakable campfire depth. Both carry the 正山 (zhengshan, 'true mountain') designation — the legal marker that the tea actually comes from this valley, not from imitators elsewhere.
