Our Philosophy
About 931 Tea
Aged and rare Chinese teas, sourced direct from the factories and artisans we trust most. Time is the ingredient.
Time Is the Ingredient
Some things cannot be rushed. A Pu-erh cake pressed twenty years ago carries something no young tea can replicate — a depth of flavour, a smoothness, a quiet complexity that only decades of patient transformation can produce. This is what we mean when we say time is the ingredient.
Like fine wine, aged whisky, or rare antiques, our teas appreciate with age. Each year in careful storage adds new layers of character. A tea that was exceptional at pressing becomes extraordinary at ten years, and singular at twenty. Age is not merely a number — it is rarity, and rarity is value.
We specialise in aged and rare Chinese teas not because they are expensive, but because time is the one ingredient that cannot be bought, hurried, or faked. Every cake, brick, and tuo in our collection has been carefully stored and personally tasted. We believe that truly great tea should tell you where it came from and how long it has been waiting for you.
Our Story
931 Tea was born from a simple conviction: exceptional tea should be accessible to everyone who appreciates it. We work directly with artisan growers in China’s most celebrated tea regions — from the misty mountains of Fujian to the ancient gardens of Yunnan — to bring you teas of extraordinary character and provenance.
The number 931 holds special meaning in Chinese tea culture. It represents the harmony between the three essential elements of tea: the leaf, the water, and the person. Together, these three become one — a single, perfect moment of connection.
Every tea in our collection is personally selected and tasted. We visit our growers each season, building relationships that span generations. This direct connection means no middlemen, no compromises — just pure, honest tea at its finest.
Our Factories
Great tea begins at the source. We work directly with China’s most legendary Pu-erh factories — not wholesalers, not brokers, but the producers themselves. This means full traceability, access to rare vintages that never reach European shelves, and the confidence that comes from knowing exactly where your tea was made and by whom.
- Menghai Tea Factory / TAETEA (est. 1940) — The gold standard of pu-erh. Birthplace of shou (ripe) pu-erh and producer of the iconic Dayi brand. Recipes 7542, 7572, 8562 — benchmarks that collectors measure all other teas against.
- Puwen Tea Factory — Produces under the Yunya brand. Known for exceptionally clean, well-processed pu-erh that rewards patient drinkers. Outstanding value.
- Wuyi Star / Mingquan — Authentic Da Hong Pao and rock oolongs from the Wuyi Mountains, Fujian. Charcoal-roasted with the mineral yan yun character that defines genuine cliff tea.
- Marukyu Koyamaen & Hibiki-an — Centuries of Uji tradition. Ceremonial-grade matcha and premium gyokuro from single cultivars (Saemidori, Okumidori, Gokou), shade-grown and stone-ground in Kyoto.
These are not anonymous commodity suppliers. Each factory has a name, a history, and a house style you can taste in every cup. That direct connection is what sets 931 Tea apart.
