Marukyu Koyamaen (丸久小山園) has been crafting matcha in the hills south of Kyoto for over three hundred years. Founded in 1704 during the Edo period, the house remains family-owned and supplies the grand tea schools of Japan — Urasenke, Omotesenke and Mushakojisenke — with their ceremony-grade powders. Every tin begins as shade-grown tencha from Uji, steamed, dried and stone-milled on traditional granite wheels turning at a speed slow enough to avoid heat damage. Their top grade, Tenju (天授), is reserved for koicha thick tea and represents the pinnacle of Japanese tea craft. We carry their ceremonial grades direct from Kyoto.
