How do Yunnan and Fujian regions differ for tea?
Most of my favorite teas come from these two provinces — what gives them their distinct character?
Yunnan (southwest China) is the cradle of tea — wild ancient trees, big-leaf varietals (Camellia assamica), high mineral soils, monsoon climate. Best known for pu-erh and Dianhong (rich, malty black tea). Fujian (southeast coast) is volcanic and mountainous — small-leaf varietals, dramatic cliffs producing Wuyi rock teas, plus Anxi (Tieguanyin) and white tea heartland. Yunnan teas tend toward earthy, sweet, full-bodied; Fujian toward floral, mineral, complex.
