How do I season a new clay teapot?
I bought my first yixing pot — what do I do before brewing in it?
Three steps: (1) Rinse thoroughly inside and out with hot water — no soap, ever; (2) Boil the pot fully submerged in clean water for 20 minutes to drive out kiln dust; (3) 'Feed' it: put a generous pinch of the tea you'll dedicate this pot to inside, fill with boiling water, let cool, repeat 2–3 times. From then on, brew only that family of tea (sheng, shou, yancha, etc.) in it. Pour leftover wash-water over the outside between uses — over months a patina develops. Never use detergent.
