Can I drink tea at night?
I love tea but I also want to sleep — is evening tea fine?
Caffeine sensitivity varies wildly, but rules of thumb: avoid black tea, matcha, and dark oolongs after 4 PM if you sleep light. Safer evening choices: well-aged shou pu-erh (caffeine drops with age and microbial transformation), heavily-roasted oolongs, white tea, or herbal infusions (rooibos, chamomile). Some people are unaffected by even evening matcha; some can't have green tea after lunch. Test what works for you. The L-theanine in tea can actually improve sleep quality if the caffeine doesn't keep you up.
